These steps protect the tooth and reduce pain on the way in.

• Knocked-out tooth: Hold it by the crown, never the root. Rinse it with milk or water. Place it back in the socket if possible, or store it in milk. Come in immediately.
• Broken tooth: Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 10 minutes at a time. Save any pieces.
• Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently around the tooth. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label. Never place aspirin against the gum.
• Lost crown or filling: Keep the crown, avoid chewing on the side, and cover the tooth with dental wax from a pharmacy.
• Bitten lip or tongue: Clean the area and press with clean gauze until the bleeding stops.
• Swelling: Apply a cold compress and keep your head elevated. Avoid heat on the area.
